Purpose: The purpose of this webinar is to provide an overview of the role of palliative care in the management of Parkinson's disease and related neurodegenerative diseases from the time of diagnosis until the end stages.

Objectives:  

  1. Describe the clinical presentation, natural history, and prognosis of Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases with Parkinsonian features (multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, and dementia with Lewy bodies)
  2. Recognize the changing needs of both patients and caregivers throughout the course of neurodegenerative disease and the related benefits of palliative care at each point
  3. Discuss key pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies for both motor and nonmotor symptoms throughout the disease trajectory

Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)

Physicians: The AAFP has reviewed MJHS Institute for Innovation in MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care Interprofessional Webinar Series - On Demand (4), and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 10/10/2024 to 10/10/2025. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This session Palliative Care in Parkinson’s Disease and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases is approved for 1.0 enduring AAFP Elective credit.
Note: Physicians should contact their respective licensing boards and specialty certification boards about acceptance of AAFP Elective credits when attempting to satisfy CME credit requirements.

Social Workers: MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0242.
