ON-DEMAND WEBINAR SERIES:
SYMPTOM DISTRESS THROUGH THE PRISM OF CULTURE

Speaker
Speaker: Lara Dhingra, PhD
Director of Health Disparities and Outcomes Research
MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care

Purpose: Diversity may be reflected in clinical differences or may relate to the many factors that contribute to culture, such as race, ethnicity, religion, and linguistics. Palliative care providers must understand the associations between illness burden and these sources of diversity. This webinar will outline perspectives on how to effectively assess and engage patients from diverse backgrounds to optimize symptom outcomes in palliative care. Clinical examples will be presented from a recent study on cancer symptoms in Chinese immigrants in New York City's Chinatown.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss cultural factors that contribute to symptom experience in serious illness
  2. Summarize culturally relevant validated tools to assess symptom distress
  3. Review strategies to improve patient and family engagement and optimize symptom outcomes

Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)
