ON-DEMAND WEBINAR SERIES:
CARING FOR PATIENTS WITH HIV
Palliative Medicine Physician
Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY
Purpose: The development and advancement of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has transformed HIV/AIDs into a chronic disease, which results in an overall increase in prevalence of HIV/AIDS cases and rise in the number of people living with symptomatic HIV disease. Chronic illnesses have high symptom burdens and increase care needs. The course of illness is characterized by periodic, acute exacerbations that will require an increase of care, and aggressive symptom management during acute and future exacerbation is essential. Prognostication is challenging because these patients are at risk for sudden death but may stabilize for prolonged periods.
Objectives:
- Discuss quality of life, goal setting, and the role of palliative care for patients with HIV
- Explain the assessment of prognostication in patients with HIV
- Review management of selected HIV-specific symptoms
- Describe strategies in advance care planning for palliative care patients with HIV
Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students
Criteria for Successful Completion:
- Attendance at entire session
- Submission of completed evaluation form
- Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)
Continuing Education Credits: 0.75
