Purpose: This webinar will illustrate the complexity of the issue of palliative sedation for palliative care teams; it remains a controversial topic. The emphasis will be on the attention to nuances that such a subject requires at every step.

Why Do I Need to Know This?
The major goal of palliative care and hospice is to relieve symptoms but sometimes all possible interventions are unsuccessful. Team members need to know what else can be done to achieve relief from symptoms.

Objectives:  

1. Discuss the definitions and indications of palliative sedation
2. Recognize the ethical and legal issues related to palliative sedation
3. Discuss the pharmacology and implementation criteria for Palliative Sedation Therapy (PST)

Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:

1. Attendance at entire session
2. Submission of completed evaluation form
3. Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)
