MANAGEMENT OF SEIZURES IN FAR ADVANCED DISEASE

Purpose: Seizures are a common occurrence in end-stage disease, occurring in a variety of conditions. They not only present multiple management challenges for hospice and palliative care practitioners but are also a significant source of distress for patients and families. The aim of this webinar is to provide a framework for the interdisciplinary team to effectively prevent and manage seizures in the setting of end-stage disease and to educate about safe management of seizures in the home.
Objectives:
- Describe common clinical presentations of seizures in advanced illness and distinguish from seizure mimics
- Implement strategies for appropriate use of antiepileptics in end-stage illness
- Develop a framework for management of active seizures in home and inpatient hospice settings
Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students
Criteria for Successful Completion:
- Attendance at entire session
- Submission of completed evaluation form
- Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)
