Goal: The purpose of this 6.5-hour online course is to introduce the concepts and importance of palliative care to LPNs and RNs working in the nursing home setting as a means to help identify, report, and manage symptoms of serious illness and the process of dying and death for residents and their families.

Objectives:

  1. Define palliative and hospice models of care in the nursing home setting
  2. Identify, report, and treat physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual distress
  3. Recognize signs and manage symptoms of approaching death
  4. Integrate therapeutic listening and communication techniques into practice
  5. Identify and report ethical issues and dilemmas that arise in end-of-life care

Target Audience: Licensed practical nurses and registered nurses

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest; 70% passing grade

Continuing Education Credits: 6.5

Nurses: MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
