Goal: The purpose of this 6.5-hour online course is to introduce the concepts and importance of palliative care to LPNs and RNs working in the nursing home setting as a means to help identify, report, and manage symptoms of serious illness and the process of dying and death for residents and their families.
Objectives:
- Define palliative and hospice models of care in the nursing home setting
- Identify, report, and treat physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual distress
- Recognize signs and manage symptoms of approaching death
- Integrate therapeutic listening and communication techniques into practice
- Identify and report ethical issues and dilemmas that arise in end-of-life care
Target Audience: Licensed practical nurses and registered nurses
Criteria for Successful Completion:
- Attendance at entire session
- Submission of completed evaluation form
- Successful completion of a posttest; 70% passing grade
